Industrial water use accounts for between 20-30% of total water consumption in the U.S. as water plays an important role in many industrial processes. Manufacturing companies utilize water in the production of their products and create wastewater from cleaning equipment or the facility or as a byproduct of the manufacturing process itself. This process and produced water needs to be treated before it is used in manufacturing or sent to the municipal waste water system. For example, food processing companies wash vegetables before processing, resulting in water contaminated with potential pathogens and organic material. Pharmaceutical and beverage manufacturers must remove chemicals coming from municipal water supplies before production. Chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturers must treat wastewater from the manufacturing of their finished product to remove toxic byproducts.
